Biography

Alexey Ludevig was born in Leningrad. He studied viola playing with his father, violist Alexey Ludevig Sr., Yuri Bashmet and Dmitry Shebalin. He also studied conducting with Maris Jansons.

Alexey Ludevig has given concerts in many countries of the world. As a soloist, he has performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Camerata Orchestra, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Orchestra and many other ensembles. He played with such famous musicians as Arnold Katz, Saulius Sondeckis, Mikaela Martin, Ayman Musakhodzhayeva, Liana Isakadze, Arto Noras, Marty Rousi, Alexander Rudin, Pascal Moragez, Sergey Stadler… Participated in many music festivals in Russia, Germany, France, Switzerland, America such as “Rancontres Musicales d’Evian”, “Schlezwig-Holstein”, “St. Petersburg White Nights Festival”, “Radio France Festival”, Davos Music Festival etc.

Together with Konstantin Orbelian, Alexey Ludevig was the director and creator of the festival “Palaces of St. Petersburg”, was also the artistic director of the festival “New Silver Age”.

Also he is founder (with Walter Barshai) and Artistic Director of “Rudolf Barshai International Strings Competition”.

He has worked as concertmaster of violas of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, guest Viola-Solo of the Lyon Opera (by the invitation of Kent Nagano), the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra and at the “Academy of St.Martin in the Fields” in London. (by the invitation of Neville Marriner)

The violist’s repertoire includes compositions created over the past three centuries. Alexey Ludevig has the honor of high–profile premiere performances of works by many Russian composers – Uspensky, Slonimsky, Sapozhnikov and others, as well as works by contemporary American and French authors, many of which were written specifically for him.

Alexey Ludevig is also the founder of the chamber ensemble “Chamber Soloists of St. Petersburg”. After returning to Russia, he teaches at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the St. Petersburg College of Music, continuing to perform as a soloist and chamber musician.

He plays the viola, created by Antonio Mariani in 1661.
